The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has released a new notification concerning the linking of PAN with Aadhaar. According to the update, individuals who received their PAN using the Aadhaar enrolment ID before October 1, 2024, have until December 31, 2025, to complete the PAN-Aadhaar linking process.

For all other PAN holders, linking is still possible but requires payment of a penalty, as the deadline to link without incurring a penalty expired on June 30, 2023. It’s important to ensure that there are no mismatches in personal details such as name, gender, or date of birth between the two documents when linking.

In a notification dated April 3, the CBDT stated that, under the authority granted by sub-section (2A) of section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, 1961, the Central Government has mandated that individuals who were issued a PAN based on the enrolment ID from their Aadhaar application submitted before October 1, 2024, must provide their Aadhaar number to the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Systems), the Director General of Income Tax (Systems), or an authorised representative by December 31, 2025, or by any other date specified by the CBDT.

PAN-Aadhaar can be linked both online and offline

Under this new notification, details about the process of PAN-Aadhaar linking or informing the Income Tax Department about the Aadhaar number have not been given. But it is being said that the commonly used process of PAN-Aadhaar linking can be applicable in this case as well. Let us tell you that you can link PAN and Aadhaar online through the website of the Income Tax Department. PAN and Aadhaar can also be linked offline by visiting the service centre of the PAN service provider, NSDL or UTIITSL. For this, the form ‘Annexure-I’ will have to be filled, and some supporting documents, like a copy of the PAN card and Aadhaar card, will have to be taken along.

There should be no mismatch in the details

Remember that for linking PAN and Aadhaar, it is necessary that there is no difference in the demographic details like name, gender and date of birth in both the documents. If there is a mismatch in the details, then the linking can be cancelled. This mismatch can be removed in two ways – either by making corrections in the PAN details or by making corrections in the Aadhaar details.
