What did the government say?
As per the latest update from the government, the price of an LPG gas cylinder is being increased by ₹50 starting Tuesday, 8 April 2025. This price hike will apply to all users, including those under the Ujjwala Yojana and those who are not. For context, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) provides free LPG connections to underprivileged women, especially in rural areas, to ensure access to clean cooking fuel. With the revised rates, both Ujjwala beneficiaries and regular consumers will now have to pay ₹50 more for each gas cylinder.
What did Hardeep Singh Puri say?
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that the price of LPG cylinder will be increased by Rs 50. For the beneficiaries of Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the price of gas cylinder will now increase from Rs 500 to Rs 550, while other consumers will now have to pay Rs 853 instead of Rs 803. The Union Minister said that this decision is not permanent and it will be reviewed every 2 to 3 weeks. Along with this, he also made it clear that the burden of increased excise duty on petrol and diesel will not be put on the common people. This increase has been made to compensate for the loss of Rs 43,000 crore incurred by the oil companies in selling gas to them.
