
SRINAGAR: In the early hours of Thursday, a significant breach developed in the River Jhelum embankment near Zoonipora village in Budgam, leading to flooding in several nearby areas.
According to officials, the breach caused flooding in Shalina, Rakh Shalina, and Baghi Shakirshah villages. Residents were evacuated overnight and moved to designated relief camps and safer places.
Authorities further stated that Seerbagh and Summerbugh villages remain at risk of flooding. Rescue teams are currently relocating people from these vulnerable areas, while residents have been urged to shift to higher ground until water levels subside.
To accommodate the displaced families, the district administration has activated six rescue centres in the affected belt. These include Government High School Wagoora, Government Higher Secondary School Khandah, Sheikh-ul-Alam High School Wagoora, Government Higher Secondary School BK Pora, Islamic Public High School Kralpora, and Dar-ul-Fatah Dangerpora.
Officials said the entire administrative machinery is on the ground. Teams from SDRF, NDRF, Police and the Revenue Department are carrying out round-the-clock relief and rescue operations.
The administration has urged people to remain cautious but avoid panic, assuring that all possible measures are being taken to safeguard lives and property. [KNT]
