On February 27, 2025, the government is set to hold a meeting to discuss the possibility of extending the winter vacation due to the snowfall recorded throughout Kashmir. This comes as schools across the region are scheduled to reopen on March 1, 2025.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Education Minister Sakina Itoo said the government will assess the situation till tomorrow and take feedback from officers about the ground situation.
“We will assess the situation till tomorrow and see how much snow will accumulate. We will evaluate the weather reports and take feedback from the Deputy Commissioners about the ground situation and make a decision on extension in winter vacation accordingly,” she told Greater Kashmir.
She however said that if need arises, the government will only consider extending winter vacation for a few days only for primary and upper primary classes.
“The higher classes (10th onwards) will resume as per the schedule. We will only consider extending winter vacation for up to primary or upper primary classes,” she said.
Following the incessant rains and snowfall across Kashmir, the parents have urged the government to extend winter vacation for a few days.
“The incessant rains have significantly lowered the temperature and sending kids to school in this weather will not be a prudent decision. Just like the winter vacation has been extended in Ladakh, the J&K government should take a similar decision albeit only for a short period of time,” Asima Bhat, a parent, told Greater Kashmir.
